The Ashford Bowling Club was set up with a £100 loan from the Capital
& Counties Bank Ltd at a meeting held in the old Grammar School, by a
number of notable Ashford businessmen, on the 1st December 1908. The
rent for the green at that time was £6 per year, but as it was church land, the
vicar, Canon P.F. Tindall, advised no games to be allowed on Sundays or Good
Friday. The club entrance fee was 2/6 (12.5p) and the annual subscription was 5
shillings. (25p)
The first president was Mr. Walter Winnans (An American Olympian of
1908) who, although born in Russia, resided at Surrenden Manor, near Ashford.
In the first few months Mr Harry Wainwright promised to let the club
have an old railway carriage as a club pavilion at the reduced cost of 50
shillings. This front part of the clubhouse still exists today. Mr Munds of
Hythe was paid £5 plus railway fees to supervise the laying of the green.
The first season started on Saturday May 12th 1909, with
fixtures against Canterbury, Hythe, Folkestone, Tenterden, Dover, Isle of
Thanet and Maidstone. Today the club has a busy fixture programme and takes
part in 3 leagues. The ladies take part in the Shepway league and competitions,
the men play in the Forest of Blean league and the club takes part in the East
Kent Mixed Triples league which it helped to form.
Looking at the future Ashford Town is currently looking at replacing
its existing clubhouse and the end of the 2012 season could see the old
clubhouse coming down and a new clubhouse and facilities being put up in its
place.
